Free agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested in July 2021. The athlete allegedly attempted to break into the Washington state home of his mother- and father-in-law and faced a number of charges following the alarming incident, including burglary and domestic violence.
More details came to light after EPSN obtained a recording of a 911 call placed by Sherman's wife, Ashley Moss. She reportedly revealed that the football player was drunk during the altercation. Moss also shared that Sherman had allegedly threatened suicide. He also reportedly attempted to fight police officers and crashed his car into a construction site. Thankfully, no one was harmed, and Sherman later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges for criminal trespass and negligent driving, in addition to a construction zone speeding infraction as part of a plea deal in connection to the incident, per The New York Times. The football player was ordered to issue a payment to his father-in-law and the Washington State Department of Transportation, and was also hit with a fine of $1,325 and spent two days in jail.
Expressing his remorse, Sherman stated in court (via AP News), "I'm grateful for the community we have and the way people continue to accept you even though you're a flawed human being and made a mistake." However, this arrest, which occurred during the NFL offseason, didn't stop Sherman from moving up in his career. The football player signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upon returning to his sport later that same year.
